Do I Believe Once Saved Always Saved?

Many of us have witnessed people pray the sinner’s prayer and many years later there is still no change from a sinful lifestyle. Others have prayed to ask for forgiveness and to ask Jesus to be their Savior only to fall back into sinful behavior. This is very painful to witness especially when we know these people personally. I am asked often, “Do I believe once saved always saved?” And “Why or why not?” This is a very serious question, and the Bible clearly gives us the answer.

Let’s look to His Word for the answer in Hebrews 10:26-30. “For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries. ²⁸ Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. ²⁹ How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? ³⁰ For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge His people.””, (NASB 1995). This clearly states that if we continue to willfully sin after receiving Jesus as Savior that there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a terrifying judgment and a fury of fire. 

We read in Hebrews 6:4-8 concerning this issue about once saved always saved it says, “For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, ⁵ and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, ⁶ and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. ⁷ For ground that drinks the rain which often falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; ⁸ but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned”, (NASB 1995). This is a severe portion of Scripture about how one who knows the truth willfully sins actually crucifies Jesus again and puts Him to shame. 

Again, let’s turn to the Word, this time in Matthew 24:10-13, “At that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another. ¹¹ Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many. ¹² Because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold. ¹³ But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved”, (NASB 1995). Jesus clearly speaks about people falling away and gives warning that if we endure to the end, we will be saved. 

This may not be a popular response, but it’s God’s Word, the truth. And His truth sets us free, (John 8:32). I fully believe that the doctrine of once saved always saved is a false one. I challenge you that disagree with my beliefs in this matter instead of trying to defend such a dangerous theology, that if I am right will lead many people to hell, to instead win as many people as you can to Jesus. Take a stand against sin, speak the truth and speak it in love to those that you know are not right with the Lord. And if you, personally are the one living a sinful life, it’s time to turn to Jesus and repent. Time is short and we must address these very tough issues biblically.

Let’s pray.

Father God, in the name of Jesus’, I repent for choosing to remain in a lifestyle of sin. Forgive me for my rebellious spirit against You and Your ways. Holy Spirit, I ask for Your help to take up my cross daily and follow after Jesus. I renounce all the demonic strongholds that have me entangled in sin. I truly ask for Your forgiveness. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I pray, amen.

And I pray for those that struggle with this issue, as I once did about once saved always saved. Help us to see and accept the truth in Your Word and speak this truth to those that are caught up in sin. Open up those opportunities, those divine encounters and lead them back to You, in Your name I pray, amen.
