Addiction is real, it’s like a giant size wrecking ball destroying individuals, marriages, families, businesses, ministries, communities, cities, and even nations. It’s wrecking havoc in the lives of people throughout this entire earth,  including the body of Christ. We can see the suffering it causes within the soul, (the mind and emotions), and in the physical realm. But what the world, and oftentimes the Church refuses to address is the root of the problem, the spirit. And until the spiritual aspect of this widespread epidemic is attended to people will continue to be enslaved to the addiction and it’s destructive behaviors and results.

Addiction is more than spiritual, it’s an evil spirit–a demon that has taken control of the mind and the emotions and works it’s evil into the physical realm of the individual and all those that they come into contact with. But even though, humanly speaking, the situation looks impossible, it is not. There is hope–His name is Jesus Christ, and with  Him all things are possible, including freedom from addiction.

To be free from addiction one needs to be delivered in the name of Jesus and by the power of His blood. Why does one need to be delivered in the name of Jesus? Because according to God’s Word, “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father,” Philippians 2:10-11. And when we have the revelation that addiction is a demon, our faith can arise to the occasion and take our God-given authority in the name that is above every name and demand this evil spirit out of ourselves, and/or loved ones.

Also, to be free from addiction one needs to be delivered by the power of the blood of Jesus. Why? According to Isaiah 53:4-5 Jesus was whipped and shed His blood so we could be healed in spirit, soul, and in body. When we spend the time and rightly divide the Word, we can determine that the translations of Isaiah 53:4-5 is holistic. That the atonement, the redemptive blood of Jesus, does in fact provide spiritual, emotional, and physical healing. (For a greater understanding see chapter 2, pages 33-41, in The Healing Creed.) This includes deliverance from demonic forces that come to steal, to kill, and to destroy us, see John 10:10.

Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:4-5.

Deliverance from addictions come in all forms. It depends upon the strength and familiarity of the demon. In other words, how long has the person been walking hand-in-hand with this demon? And how far into the darkness of sinful behavior has this person willingly gone with this evil spirit?

Sometimes all it takes is a prayer of repentance and the person is free from demonic behavior, because it’s just that–ungodly behavior. But other times the demon does not want to let go of the person, because it inhabits, possesses the individual, and it’s not going to leave it’s abode without a spiritual fight.

Now you notice I said a “spiritual fight”. You cannot force a demon out of someone with physical force or physical means, it’s a spiritual battle. For example, screaming at the demon, or physically slapping the individual does nothing to the demon. In fact, the demon is enjoying your display of ignorance and it wants you to make that person suffer more. It knows at that point you do not know who you are in Christ, and you are unaware of the authority in the name and in the blood of Jesus that you have been given.

To force this demon to leave you will have to create a spiritual atmosphere that the demon cannot handle being in. This means you will have to activate spiritual weapons that are supernaturally stronger than it is.

DEMONS OBEY THE FOLLOWING:

1. The authority of the name of Jesus.that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,” Philippians 2:10.

2. The supernatural activation of the power of the blood of Christ. “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed,” Isaiah 53:5.

3. And they will obey you when they know that you clearly understand that you have dominion over them. “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you,” Luke 10:19.

TO CREATE THE RIGHT ATMOSPHERE YOU WILL NEED TO:

1. Spend time in prayer and fasting. “So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting,” Matthew 17: 20-21.

2. Activate the fruits of the Spirit. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law,” Galatians 5:22-23.

3. Pray in the Holy Spirit.

  • You need to activate supernatural power over the enemy – But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth,” Acts 1:8.
  • The Holy Spirit will pray through you what is needed – Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God,” Romans 8:26-27.
  • You need to keep yourself strong throughout the entire battle. –He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church,” 1 Corinthians 14:4.

4. And you will need to kick out the doubters and unbelievers from the place. You may actually need to leave the place that is familiar to the one possessed by the demon and bring them into your territory where hopefully is saturated with the presence of the Lord. When Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, He said to them, “Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him. But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. And the report of this went out into all that land,” Matthew 9:23-26.

AFTER THE DELIVERANCE YOU WILL NEED TO:

After the deliverance has taken place you must do the following as we are taught in Matthew 12:43-45 to keep the demons from returning. “When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order.  Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.”

  • Renew your mind and your ways as you read God’s Word. My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.
Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life,” Proverbs 4:20-23.
  • Develop relationship with God as you pray (talk to God) in your natural language and build yourself up as you pray in the Holy Spirit. “Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you,” Jeremiah 29:12. And again in 1 Corinthians 14:4a, He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself .”
  • Keep the spiritual atmosphere clean as you listen to praise and worship music.See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise,  redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,  speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,  submitting to one another in the fear of God,” Ephesians 5:15-21.

If you will work these Scriptures out to the fullest you will find the freedom from addiction that you and your loved one so desire.

  1. Steve, a believer relapsed into Meth addiction, along with this addiction a sinful lifestyle. Doing things I never thought he would do. I’m asking the Lord to Deliver him or get him to the help he needs and bring him to his knees so he will repent and surrender to Jesus completely

    1. In the name of Jesus, I rebuke a spirit of addiction and this stronghold over Steve. I pray for inner healing of his mind and emotions and that Steve is released from whatever deep seeded issues are holding him back, give them to Jesus, repent and return to Jesus and be delivered and set free, and move forward with his life/ In Jesus’ name, I pray he be full of strength, and restoration through the healing power of Holy Spirit. I speak to his mind and body to overcome all cravings, all for the glory of the Lord, amen.

  2. Prayer request for my senior brother who has been addicted to drugs for over 40 years. Read your article on “ the real root you must address in seeking deliverance from a spirit of addiction” and my spirit bore witness. I know I have a role to play in my brothers deliverance. I need your prayers to know how to go about it.

    1. Dear Victoria,
I believe in this situation you need to pray and fast for a time for your brother’s deliverance from drug addiction. After you have fasted and prayed, go to him and address the issue, and minister love and compassion to him. Lead him into a prayer of repentance, a prayer to receive Jesus or to rededicate his life to Him. Then prayer for deliverance, and get him help for accountability.

      Blessings,
      Becky

  3. Dear Becky,

I was very amaze to see and hearing your story in ISN. I cannot stop watching it over and over again.
How can you help me in my immediate need healing for my husbands addiction and emphysema?
I was weeping in the church asking God, what’s lacking in my prayers why my friend is not healing and in front of His altar of His when I blacked out when I saw a bluish hair light that says THE WORD. And that light gets into the skin of my forehead and it says again, THE WORD.
I also want to know what is that the Father God put something into my head. He said, I give it to you for you to come to me.
I pray for sick people. Some got better according to them. I did not ask for penny. Because God said, I give it to you free so give it free too. But I do not know how to begin.
I want my husband deliver from his smoking addiction and healed from his emphysema. How can you help us?

    Thank you,
    Norma

    1. Hello Norma,
You are hearing from God, His Word will change the situation. You need to read and study the word until it is more real to you than the sickness or disease attacking your husband. Like Abraham and Sarah they had to get over the realm of the 5 senses and human reasoning and believe God’s promise to them. And we are the same, we need to settle in our spirits that God is faithful… Heb. 11:11 we read that when Sarah judged God faithful then she conceived her miracle.
Do you have the Healing Creed? If not, get it and have your Bible with you and go through it and keep it up until your faith produces the manifestation of His already healing (See Isaiah 53:4-5).
Now in Jesus’ name, I renounce this spirit of addiction and the spirit of death that are working hard to destroy your husband. Every time he tries to smoke it will cause him to vomit and he will not be able to smoke again. And then via the renewal of the Word his mind and old habits are transformed and are delivered and free from this. Father, forgive him for allowing a substance to take such control over his life. And I speak into his lungs that they are recreated, healed and made whole and he can start to breathe on his own naturally and freely. In Jesus’ name, amen.

  4. Prayer Request, my son addicted to Marijuana and working in nightclubs. Unstable financially and needs healing in Spirit ,soul ,mind emotions and to come to repentance and recommitt his life to the Lord Jesus Christ.

    1. Dear Christy,
We lift up your son to the Father, and in Jesus’ name, we ask You, Holy Spirit to hover over him, bring conviction to his spirit. And bring born-again, spirit-filled Christians his way that he will respect and listen to. Holy Spirit, show him the end of his careless, sinful lifestyle so that he will turn from his wickedness before it is too late for him. In the name of Jesus, amen.

      1. Hello there, i don’t m ow where to start but I know I’m in the right place. I am recovering from a 7 year meth addiction, it’s my first time in recovery and I have been caught up in the secular world’s remedy on how to deal with addiction in sobriety A.A.etc… but I can see the lord was guiding me to this truth that I am not a addict for life like these programs were suggesting me to admit and claim. So I know came to the truth that it is a spirit of addiction that can and will be permanently cast out of me. Now I am born again, and have recently relapsed for a day then did my first self deliverance and I believe it went out. But I was not prepared for the strong waves of attacks shortly afterwards that a week later lead me right back to doing it. And so here I am. In need of help and guidance. So currently I am living at a sober home, and part of the rules here is that if you relapse you immediately get kicked out, but yet again they don’t believe that you can be delivered from addiction anyways, but what I’m getting at is that I’m not sure if this means that I need to go back to rehab? Like is there something wrong with my spiritual foundation? Do I need to remove myself from here and go to a Christian rehab? I am unsure what to do and/which way to go, thank you so much for your time.

        1. In the name of Jesus, I rebuke a spirit of addiction and this stronghold over you. I pray for inner healing of your mind and emotions and that you are released from whatever deep seeded issues are holding you back, give them to God and be set free and move forward with life. Be full of strength and restoration through the healing power of the Holy Spirit. I speak to your mind and body to overcome all cravings , all for the glory of the Lord, amen.
