I was recently with a couple of my grandchildren for several weeks. And I want to share a story about faith that applies to adults too. My granddaughter likes to watch a program called, “Fancy Nancy”. And Fancy Nancy has a Victorian doll with lots of blond curls. My granddaughter asked her mom if she could buy her one. Her mom thought about it and gave her some chores to do, and she needed to be willing to give a doll of similar size away. She agreed and did her extra chores and chose a doll of equal size to give away. Mama went online to find a Victorian doll but could not find one. Oh, what a crisis this caused. Obviously, my granddaughter was upset, whining and pouting and feeling rather blue. I spoke up and said to her that perhaps instead of pouting that maybe she should pray to Jesus and ask Him for a Victorian doll in faith. I gave her a little lesson on how to do so with a thankful heart as if it was already done. My granddaughter loves Jesus very much and talks to Him throughout her day. In other words, she has relationship with Him and is a member of God’s family, so this means she has covenant rights with the Father by the blood of Jesus. So, she did as I suggested, and our Lord is so good and eager to respond to prayers of faith. Shortly after she prayed a prayer of faith with thanksgiving her mom found a perfect Victorian doll on eBay for an affordable price. About a week later the doll was delivered to the door. Oh, what joy filled my granddaughter’s heart!
This is a great faith lesson for all of us today. Perhaps you’ve asked the Lord for something, but what you asked for hasn’t happened yet. And like my granddaughter, you find yourself very upset, maybe even angry. If this is where you are at, I have a question for you, “Did you ask in faith?”
God’s Word is clear about how we are to ask God for something, “And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.” Matthew 21:22, (NKJV). John 14:14 says this concerning how we are to ask, “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” (NKJV). And another witness to this principle of faith is, “Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.” (Mark 11:24, NKJV).
You may wonder why the Spirit of the Lord is working with my granddaughter’s faith with a doll. Because this is her maturity level, while it may seem unimportant to some, it is very important to her, and it is a lesson in faith that she will carry with her the rest of her life.
And another important factor about praying in faith has to do with a thankful heart. Had my granddaughter remained in a negative attitude it would be the evidence that she did not believe what she was asking Jesus for. But she thanked Him for giving her this beautiful Victorian doll before her mama found it online, and before it had arrived at her doorstep. And being thankful prevented her from being full of doubt and unbelief that it would not happen. It kept her heart in faith expecting to receive this blessing from Jesus.
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:6-7, (NKJV).
In closing, I ask you again, “Did you ask in faith?” If not, pray a short prayer of repentance, and ask again, this time in faith as if it has already happened and with thanksgiving.
