Try the Spirits Part 3

Paul is again warning us in his letter to Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:5-7 to protect us from the deception in these last days: “having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” We are not to be naïve, but wise. No matter how godly, how charismatic, how charming or how appealing the one with a message may seem, we are responsible to try the spirits and judge the message against the Word of God. We endanger ourselves when we run to others for direction and comfort instead of to God. The modern-day prophet is not meant to take the place of God.

True prophets bring clarity to the Word. They help to shed revelation knowledge on God’s people. They do not mince word, but are very direct and to the point. They do not use flattery to gain favor. The prophetic words they deliver are not their own, but God’s. Their message compliments the Word of God, but does not substitute the Word. They do not need to be coaxed from the receiver to see if what they are prophesying is the truth. They will bring transparency to the obscure. The message they deliver from God will release freedom. They have a low tolerance level for blatant sin and a rebellious spirit. They are not going to ask you to compromise and do something ungodly. Understanding these characteristics should help to discern a true prophet from a false prophet.

False messages are not only delivered by false prophets and false teachers, but also by other means as well. Other delivery services are lying and deceptive spirits whispering to our minds and emotions. We are to judge these messages passing through our minds and working on our emotions. We must learn to judge our own thoughts against the Word of God and do as Paul instructs us in 2 Corinthians 10:5: “casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”

Judging the message by the Word of God will protect our hearts from being deceived in these last days. It also will highlight the venomous snakes that are camouflaged in God’s thicket.

Try the Spirits Part 2

The other day, we read how John in 1 John 4:1-6 warns us of the spirit of Antichrist that we heard was coming in the form of false prophets. And that we are not to believe every spirit, but we are to test them to see if they are of God or not.

Then Paul warns us in 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 about false prophets that transform themselves into prophets of Christ. We are not to be gullible, but be responsible and try the spirits.

Peter also warns us in 2 Peter 2:1-3 of false prophets and false teachers and their destructive heresies, and that many will follow after their destructive ways.

These false prophets and false teachers by the evil power of deception camouflage themselves to be like us. And their numbers are increasing in these last days.

The thought that there is deception in the camp of the Lord is discouraging. The fact that many will be led astray from the faith is even more disheartening. But these warnings are not meant to detour us from walking in the supernatural; they are to help us not be foolhardy. They are to aid us in being wise and able to discern true gold from fool’s gold and walking in the true power of the supernatural.

This is why we need to do as the Lord instructs us: “Try the spirits.” Evaluate or judge them; put them on trial according to the Word of God. We are the judge; the message is the defendant. The Bible is our law book that we base our judgment upon, and we are to judge the message. There are only two choices: either the message is true or the message is false. Does the message line up with the law book, the Bible? Or do we have to compromise the truth of the Bible in an area to approve the message?

A good judge is not swayed by emotions, but has studied the law books and with wisdom implements the law. To make good judgements, we need to know what the law books says. In order to have a fair trial, the truth needs to be revealed. In order for the truth to be revealed, the message needs to be examined according to the Word of God. We cannot rightly judge unless we have studied God’s law, His Word. We are instructed in 2 Timothy 2:15, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” We are the ones who are to study the Word of God for ourselves; we are the ones who need to try the spirits; and we are the ones who are to judge the message according to the Word of God. Is the message true or false?

The evil one, satan, and his demonic force are experts at being wicked. Through trial and error they have found our weakness and will appear as angels of light, false prophets and false teachers to cause us to fall into destruction. If they see we do not read and study the Bible on a consistent basis, they will bring false teachers and false prophets our way. Then before we know it, we could find ourselves in ruins because we believed a false prophet who declared the world was going to end yesterday. We foolishly believed that he could predict the return of the Lord when Jesus Christ clearly states in Matthew 24:36, But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.” In our eagerness for the Lord’s return, we willfully believed the charismatic personality and are now broke and bitter because we did not “try the spirits.” We did not take the time to rightly evaluate, judge or put the message on trial to see if this message lined up with the written Word of God.

Try the Spirits Part 1

John warns and instructs us in 1 John 4:1-6, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world. You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.”

To protect ourselves in these last days we are to test the spirits. The enemy’s messengers will come especially to those whom they have witnessed do not judge what appears to them, for these people are easy prey for the enemy to devour.

We are not to be gullible, but responsible and try the spirits. Paul warns s in 2 Corinthians 11:13-15, “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.” He is warning us that there are false prophets and false teachers and that their numbers are increasing in these last days, but they will appear to us to be of Christ. So just because we see or hear something amazing, does not mean it is of God.

Peter also warns us in 2 Peter 2:1-3, “But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.”

As I meditate upon these warnings, I think of a time I was taking a nature walk and enjoying the beauty of the rainforest. I bent down to pick up an old rusty bucket that was in the weeds. As I reached out to grab the bucket, I realized that I was right on top of a venomous snake in the grass. It held its head and upper body so still that it blended in perfectly with the tall surrounding grass. I didn’t recognize it until I was very close to it and looked it in the eye. But as soon as it knew I had seen it, it dropped and slithered quickly away, deeper into the thicket of the woods.

Right after my encounter with this snake, our son, Joaquin, was down by the pond and he cried out, “Mom, there is a big snake!” The snake he saw was different from the one I just saw. Then later that morning our son, Andres, was walking down the path and he saw a snake, and it was a different species. Then the next day my husband, David, was working outside and he too came across a snake. We all came across snakes within a two-day span of time, each one a different species, but still they were snakes and we did not spot them until we were right on top of them.

Beware, for there are highly venomous spiritual snakes camouflaged within the Body of Christ today. As we draw close to the end of this age, their numbers will increase and their poison will become deadlier than before.

Revive Your Spirit

There’s much talk for the need of revival throughout the world, our nation, and in the body of Christ. And this is certainly true, but I’m not sure if God’s people understand how to make this happen.

We can fill large auditoriums with God’s people, have the most popular preachers and Christian singers, people can sing and dance throughout the night, and still not have revival. We can travel the world and revisit where amazing moves of the Holy Spirit took place, and still not enter into true revival.

Why? Because revival is a matter of the individual’s spiritual heart. It involves self-judgement and repentance. Spiritual revival resurrects the dead, gives oxygen so that the spirit can breathe again.

True revival is not staged, and it doesn’t come cheap. It doesn’t transfer from one person to another, you have to go after it for yourself.

You must look at yourself with your spiritual eyes wide open, and recognize your utter desperation for the Spirit of the Living God. Become the deer that David describes in Psalms 42 that is so thirsty that it pants in desperation for the water, this is how we are to desire our Lord, Jesus Christ.

“As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually say to me, “Where is your God?”” Psalms 42: 1-3.

If you are thirsty for God, I invite you to join me for 40 days for a Daniel Fast. I will teach you how to do this with daily words of encouragement and instruction. Not only will we cleanse our bodies by eating fruits and vegetables, but spiritually we will cleanse our spirits by the washing of His Word, and learn to enter into fellowship with Him, pray daily for the healing of our Nation, and breakthrough to the realm of the miraculous for ourselves and our loved ones.

This fast starts, Monday, March 28th and ends Friday, May 6th.

Make sure to have on hand for Monday, March 28th, a supply of fruits and vegetables that you enjoy. You can juice these, or make into smoothies, or eat whole, cooked or raw, organic or non-organic, which ever you prefer. Drink lots of water, tea, and natural fruit juices. We will eliminate added sugars, and not use salt.

Have your Bible on hand, and a journal, a notebook is just fine for journaling.

If you will put your all into this time of prayer and fasting, you will enter into the place of true revival.

How to Encourage When Healing Tarries?

How do you encourage the faith of someone that has been waiting for a long time for healing to manifest?

Depending upon how well you know the person, I would suggest that you spend time with this person and listen carefully to what they are actually saying concerning healing. Let them talk from the depth of their heart about life and healing. By listening to them and to the leading of the Holy Spirit carefully, you will be able to tell what is blocking their healing from manifesting.

Usually, if a long period of time has passed, they are discouraged and somewhere along the line they have entered into the realm of doubt and are in need of teaching that God is able and willing to heal them. Most of the time we are not even aware of doubt.

Or it may be a pain issue, in this case, the person needs to be encouraged and taught from the Bible how to overcome the realm of the 5 senses, while they activate their faith.

It could be that this person has had a very difficult life, and there is a root of bitterness that needs to be pulled out from them. Perhaps, depression has set in, or they have accepted satan’s lie that they are not worthy to be loved by God, and therefore, cannot receive His goodness, such as supernatural healing.

These individuals need to learn how to forgive, trust God, and move forward in life. The only way this can be done is that they first, make the quality decision to move forward with God. Second, they need to be taught how to recognize the truth of God’s Word, from the lie of satan. And learn to do as 2 Corinthians 10:5 instructs us, “casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,”   They need to be discipled in God’s Word, so that they can heal and be made whole.

These are just a few hindrances that can block our faith for healing when it tarries.

What we, the encouragers need to do is be quiet and learn to listen for the root of the problem, and minister to the hurting along these lines. Usually, these individuals need to start their healing process over again, and this time be trained properly in the Word concerning healing.

Sickness Steals Joy

The Bible tells us that the joy of the Lord is our strength. It is supernatural and it empowers us, and causes us to live in the realm of victory. This is one reason why the enemy attacks our joy level. He knows depression releases defeat, and so he works hard to steal our joy. One way he robs our joy is through the pain of sickness and disease.

He stole Bridgete’s joy through the pain of TMJ. She was in constant pain for 5 years. Her doctor could not help her. She tried acupuncture and was not free from the pain. She took 8 ibuprofen every day and Tylenol in between, and was still in constant pain. The enemy stole her joy, she could not even smile because she hurt so much.

But then she heard about a healing service, and came. Her faith was encouraged, she came forward and received a healing touch, and instantly 5 years of agonizing pain, and depression were gone. And not only was her jaw realigned and healed, but her joy was restored in Jesus’ name.

Rejoice in the healing power of the Lord, as you watch and  listen to Bridgete share her testimony.

Parkinson’s Disease Healed

Do you realize that physical attacks are mere manifestations of spiritual ones? If we believe the words of Jesus in John 10:10 when He says, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” then we will understand why physical attacks, such as Parkinson’s disease happen.

Parkinson’s disease is a spiritual weapon formed by satan to steal, to kill, and to destroy people. But we do not have to accept these wicked attacks formed against us, because Jesus came to give us life and life in abundance, through the spiritual blessing of supernatural healing.

Study the Word of God concerning healing so that your faith can be strengthened to rebuke these attacks and believe for your healing.

Encourage your faith as you listen to Betty Hertzler share her glorious testimony at a recent healing seminar of how she is  healed from Parkinson’s disease.

Fasting for 40 Days

We’ve discussed the supernatural power that is released by prayer and fasting when we are in need of a breakthrough. Please see, “Do You Need a Breakthrough?” And then we studied, “Which Type of Fast is Best for You?” And now this is the third part in this series about fasting for 40 days.

First of all, there are only 3 people recorded in the Bible that fasted for 40 days. They are Moses, Elijah, and Jesus. You can read in Exodus 34:28-29, about Moses’ supernatural encounter on Mount Sinai with God. It was such a powerful encounter that the glory of the Lord shown on his face, and the people would actually cover his face with a veil because he shown so brightly.

In 1 Kings 19:7-9, during Elijah’s 40 day fast on God’s mountain, Mount Horeb which is also the same mountain that Moses was on, Mount Sinai, the downtrodden prophet Elijah is restored from fear, failure and depression.

In both these accounts, Moses and Elijah, powerful men of God are being led up the mountain of God without basic provision for 40 days. This fact speaks volumes to me. Near the top of the mountain there is a wilderness to pass through. There is a test of obedience and discipline that leaders must be willing to walk. They must overcome pride and entitlement, and the only way seems to be by humbling themselves before God by prayer and fasting.

Then we have our wonderful Lord and Savior, Jesus who was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness, where satan first tempts Him to break His fast early by turning stones into bread to eat. Then He is tempted to test Father God’s faithfulness if He deliberately does something foolish that could perhaps end His physical life before His destiny at Calvary. And then He is tempted with false power and position if He will bow down to satan. And our faithful Jesus overcomes every form of temptation by speaking the Word of God. See Matthew 4:1-11.

And we should take note that during this time of temptation, satan is also trying to cause Jesus to question His true identity, and fall into the sin of entitlement. Be aware of the enemy’s tactics during this time of prayer and fasting.

And isn’t it interesting that satan first tempts Jesus to break His fast. This shows us that fasting must be very powerful if he will try to tempt Jesus and us to give up and quit. Be like Jesus, don’t give in. Use the Word of God during this time to overcome the temptation to break your fast.

Amazingly, years later, these three men, Moses, Elijah and Jesus meet up with each other on the Mount of Transfiguration. See Matthew 17.  Again, this proves that supernatural power is released during times of prayer and fasting. And our destinies are forever altered when we obey.

The difficulties that you will encounter during a 40 day fast are as follows.

o   You will be led into a spiritual wilderness. God does not promise that prayer and fasting will or should be easy.

o   God will test your faithfulness. He will try the motives of your heart.

o   When you are physically weak and worn down, the devil will make his move and attack.

o   The enemy will cause you to question your identity in Christ.

o   The enemy will fight against you in the arena of your calling.

o   With his lying tongue he will make false promises if you will give into his temptations.

Years ago, the Lord required of me to go on three 40 day fasts in one year. It was hard on the flesh. It was preparation for the healing ministry, and I am still harvesting the fruit that was planted back then.

I began with drinking a non-salted clear broth made from boiled vegetables that was strained. I drank this 3 times a day, along with lots of water throughout the day. Then, eventually the only thing my system could handle was warm water.

Along with drinking the clear vegetable broth and water, I would spend most of my days and nights reading and studying the Word of God. Actually, I read through the entire Bible during each of these 3 fasts. And I spent much time in prayer and worship.

Personally, I do not recommend this fast for those that are struggling with eating disorders, or are fighting sickness and disease. If, this is you, there are other types of fasting that would be better for you. And I highly recommend that you ask your physician how you can participate in a type of biblical fasting.

I know of a woman that struggled with an eating disorder in her past, and she knew her weakness in this area and instead of fasting from food, she fasted sugar and salt, and from entertainment, and in their place she read and studied her Bible more, and spent personal time in worship.

As I shared in an earlier post, during times of prayer and fasting, I purchase a new notebook. I purchase the biggest one I can find, and I journal throughout the day. On the first page, I write down the start and end dates of the fast. I add to this page Scripture verses that I will stand on, and specific prayer requests or reasons for the fast.

Even though, 40 day fasts are difficult on the flesh, they are very powerful spiritually. Through personal experience I have found that the benefits outweigh the difficulties. And these are some of the benefits that you can expect during a 40 day clear liquid fast.

o   You will encounter the Spirit of God in a greater manner then before.

o   Your spiritual senses will be empowered.

o   The gifts of the Spirit become highly activated.

o   You will see and hear God clearly.

Seven Scriptural Reasons for Prayer and Fasting

  1. Divine Protection. Ezra proclaims a corporate time of prayer and fasting for God’s divine protection. Ezra 8: 21-23.
  2. Physical Healing. Paul fasts for 3 days and nights from food and water and his blind eyes open via the obedience of Ananias. Acts 9:1-19.
  3. Deliverance from evil spirits. In Matthew 17:14-21 Jesus teaches His disciples that the only way certain evil spirits will leave is by prayer and fasting.
  4. Restoration from failure and depression. 1 Kings 19, the well-trained prophet Elijah is restored from failure and depression.
  5. Victory over temptation. In Matthew 4: 1-11, we read how Jesus fasted 40 days and nights, and victory over very strong temptations.
  6. Repentance and revival. In 1 Samuel 7:6, God uses Samuel to revive the people that were enslaved to idol worship and lead them to repentance and deliverance.
  7. Release into ministry. Again in Matthew 4:1-11, after 40 days and nights of fasting Jesus is released into 3 years of faithful ministry.

So, let me repeat myself from the previous post, choose your type of fast, set your dates, purchase your journals, and let the breakthroughs and the miracles begin!

Which Type of Fast is Best for You?

In my last post, “Do You Need a Breakthrough?”  I shared with you God’s method to breakthrough from a stronghold of the enemy over our lives. Also, I gave you lists of both physical and spiritual benefits of prayer and fasting.  And I promised you that in today’s post that we would discuss a few different types of fasts found in the Bible. Let’s get started on our study of prayer and fasting and move into the promised land of Breakthrough.

There are different types of fasts throughout the Bible. Read through the list and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to the one that is best for you.

  1. A General Fast is when you abstain from eating all food, but you do drink water. Like Jesus did when He was led into the wilderness, see Matthew 4: 1-11.
  2. A Partial Fast, such as the Daniel fast found in the Book of Daniel 1: 12, ““Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink.” Their diet consisted of only vegetables to eat and water to drink. And then again in Daniel 10:2-3 where it says, “In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.” This type of fast lasts for 21 days, and not only restricts choice foods, meats, alcohol from the diet, but also forbids the luxury to use anointing oils and lotions.
  3. A Total Fast, is when one goes without food and water. An example of this can be found in Acts 9:9 with the conversion of Saul to Paul, “And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank.” And another example of this can be found in Esther 4: 15-16, “Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai: “Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!”

In these 2 examples of a total fast, both lasted for 3 days, they ate no food and drank no water. And one example is of an individual, Paul fasting and the other shows us an example of a corporate fast, with Esther and the Jews.

Words of wisdom concerning prayer and fasting.

o   Remember, it is PRAYER and fasting. Without prayer, it is just another form of dieting and this is not God’s purpose for fasting.

o   Keep in mind that while you are fasting, especially during longer fasts that your physical body will not function as it normally does. It will tire more easily, you may have to fight off a headache or two, and there will be moments that your digestive system will hurt, mainly in the beginning of an extended fast and when coming off of a fast. That’s why you need to slowly work into a fast, and the same is required for coming off of a fast.

o   A few days before you start your fast, cut back on food intake, caffeine, sugar and salt, and increase your water intake. And when it is time to come off of a fast, your digestive system has not been functioning as normal and it can’t handle large amounts of food. Use caution and do not overload your system.

o   I would also caution someone that is struggling with anorexia or some other type of physical struggle or sickness and disease that you use common sense and ask your physician for medical advice how you can participate in this biblical practice.

o   Also, for married couples your sexual organs will not function as normal and you will be wise to heed the scriptural advice in 1 Corinthians 7:3-6, “Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. But I say this as a concession, not as a commandment.”

How long should you fast for?

Honestly, there are no set rules for how long you should fast for. I recommend that you pray to the Lord and ask Him how long your fast should be. If you have not developed your spiritual listening ear to hear Him respond, then I suggest that you first fast for a day, and work your way up from there.

Several years ago, we had a young man volunteer with our mission for one and a half years. Before he left, he wanted to learn how to fast. He observed my husband and I fast for extended periods of time, but felt he was not ready for that. So, he sought the Lord, and this is the plan God gave to him.

The first week, he fasted for one full day. The second week, he fasted for two full days, third week, 3 days, and so forth. Until he worked up to the seventh week and he fasted for 7 full days. Perhaps, this could be a plan for some of you who have never fasted before.

In the Bible we see that God’s people fasted anywhere from 1 to  40 days.

During times of prayer and fasting, I purchase a new notebook. I purchase the biggest one I can find, and I journal throughout the day. On the first page, I write down the start and end dates of the fast. I add to this page Scripture verses that I will stand on, and specific prayer requests or reasons for the fast.

This past year, I have been fasting often with a good friend of mine. We decide what type of fast we will do, and for how long, usually 1-3 days per week. We share our present personal needs, the needs of our families, and those who we know that need us to stand in the gap for them with our prayers and fasting. We have seen many answers to prayer come to pass. It has been wonderful.

So, choose your type of fast, set your dates, purchase your journals, and let the breakthroughs and the miracles begin!

The next post will be devoted to going on a 40 day fast.

Do You Need a Breakthrough?

Do you need a breakthrough for you, your family, your marriage, your ministry or business? Does it seem like something is preventing the answer to your prayers from coming forth? Perhaps, you need to enter into a time of prayer and fasting.

Both prayer and fasting are 2 supernatural weapons of spiritual warfare, and when used together they cause us to become lethal to the enemy’s plans formed against us.

But even though we have been given such powerful weapons to overcome the wiles of satan, most Christians do not use them. Why? The Bible tells us in Matthew 26:41, “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” It takes obedience and discipline to activate the power of prayer and fasting.

Yes, it takes obedience. According to the Bible, it is not if, but when you fast. Do you realize that fasting is mentioned about 80 times throughout the Bible? And 30 or more of these verses are found in the New Testament.

I remember one time I was about to sit down and read and study my Bible, but before I did I asked the Lord if He wanted me to embark on another fast. Wouldn’t you know my Bible fell open to the following passage, “I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.” Job 23:12. Now, I had a choice to make, either I was going to pretend that the Lord did not respond to my request or I was going to obey Him. Fortunately, I obeyed.

Prayer and fasting are spiritual disciplines. And just as godly parents train and discipline their children in the ways of the Lord, so too, our Heavenly Father loves us and knows what we have need of. He understands what is best for us, and by activating these spiritual weapons, we also gain 2 important attributes of the Lord, obedience and discipline. Prayer and fasting are beneficial for us.

Let’s look at some of the benefits that prayer and fasting provide us with.

Spiritual Benefits

o   Protection from our enemies

o   Freedom from the bondages of sin

o   Victory over temptations

o   Manifestation of physical healing

o   Deliverance from evil spirits

o   Repentance and revival

o   Restoration

o   Release into ministry

Physical Benefits

o   Detoxes your body from impurities.

o   Resets your hormones.

o   Lowers weight.

o   It has other physical benefits as well, such as, lowering cholesterol levels, and high blood pressure, and other physical ailments.

Prayer and fasting have both physical and spiritual benefits for us, but even more importantly they are heavenly weapons that when used together cause spiritual breakthrough for us.

On the next post, let’s look at few different types of fasts found in God’s Word for you to choose from.
