Holy Spirit’s Power Overcomes Addiction

In my last post, Is Addiction a Disease?” we looked at several common problems that get people stuck. The first reason people get stuck in a life-style of addiction is that instead of calling it what it is, sin, they call it a disease and therefore do not deal with the root of the problem and try to treat addiction as you would a disease in the natural. But the root problem is not a physical problem it is a spiritual one. And needs to be addressed accordingly.

Another reason people get stuck is that they refuse to accept the responsibilities for their own bad decisions and look for others to place the blame on like Adam and Eve did in the Garden of Eden when they ate of the forbidden fruit. Adam first blamed Eve, but ultimately blamed God for giving her to him. And when Eve was asked why she ate of the forbidden fruit she blamed the devil. And you know what? God’s people still blame one another, God and the devil today.

In addition to blaming others, people blame circumstances, like their past. Why is this equally wrong? No matter how difficult your situations may be God has given you the ability to overcome. Not in your own strength, but with His strength. Zechariah 4:6 says, “’Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.” God does not expect you to overcome this addiction in your own strength.

God expects you to admit that you have a problem with an addiction. James 5:16 tells us to, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

Not only are you to confess this sin of addiction to another, you are to pray with effectual power with others and alone. There are different ways to pray but here are 2 that will help you.

  1. The Prayer of Faith. Hebrews 11:6 tells us, “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” When you pray to God, trust Him and in His faithfulness, believe He has your best interest in mind, and that He wills and is able to help you overcome all addiction. Remember you are to rely upon His strength, and not your own.
  2. Pray in the Holy Spirit. Many Christians have fallen from God’s grace and into sinful and addictive behavior because they no longer pray in the Spirit. They have forgotten the power of praying in tongues, and many never did as God’s Word instructs us to begin with, “Receive the Holy Spirit, Jn. 20:22. The Bible is clear when it says in Acts 1:8,You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.” Again, this is not human power, but supernatural power from God.

Along with praying in faith and in your supernatural language, tongues, there are initial steps to take to overcome this slavery to addiction. Here are beginning steps that must be taken.

  1. Be truthful, admit that you are struggling with an addiction.
  2. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the root issue for this addictive and sinful behavior in your life.
  3. Ask God to forgive you for this sin of addiction.
  4. Ask the Holy Spirit for His guidance in which plan of action you should take. Be specific, for example ask Him which program will work for you. And do what He says—be faithful and consistent and you will see results.
  5. Confess your sin of addiction to another Christian that has proven themselves to be mature in the faith, and responsible to handle life situations according to the Word of God. And set up a strict plan of accountability, whether it be a professional program, or accountability with a trusted person or a group.

And personally, I would never align myself with people that do not believe and practice the power of the Holy Spirit. If they do not actively live out this supernatural power then they are weak in the faith and dependent upon their own strength. And you have already seen in your own life how weak your own strength can be. You need the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome this addiction in your life.

Is There More to Christianity than Salvation?

You believe Jesus is Lord, you attend weekly services at your local Christian fellowship, you read the Bible, and even memorize Scriptures. Yet, something is missing. You begin to question your walk with the Lord. And with quite a bit of delusion, you have come to the conclusion that something is missing and there has got to be more to Christianity than what you have.

A young man in Austin, Texas came to this point of delusion with his daily walk with the Lord. He was raised in a denominational Church that taught him this was it. And even though he realized that his salvation in Jesus Christ is a great gift and his entrance into eternal life in heaven, something was missing to walk out his faith on this earth. And he reached the point where he knew there had to be more to Christianity. He cried out to God and said, “Enough is enough!” And accepted an invitation to come to a healing conference being held with another fellowship that weekend.  And this is where I met this young man.

This young man had heard the Word preached before, but never with the demonstration of power that he read about in the Bible. And when he came into the presence of the Holy Spirit it made him cry out all the harder for more –more of God. He wanted it all, not just part.

I offered to minister the Baptism of the Holy Spirit to those that had never received this precious gift before. He came forward, and even though this was all new to him, he was ready to receive from God what had been missing all these years. I placed my hand upon him and baptized him in the Holy Spirit. And this young man not only started to pray in tongues, but he fell to the floor and his spirit cried out with great sorrow and joy. Sorrow for what he had lost during all these years because he was taught that the workings of the Holy Spirit were done away with. And he also sobbed for joy because at this moment he stepped into a fullness with God he had never known before.

Another man had been in the same denomination for many years and was furious when he first learned the truth about the Holy Spirit. He felt he had been robbed, and he had. But since then, he has begun to walk in the fullness of the Spirit and even ministers healing to the sick with success.

These are both common responses when God’s people first receive the truth about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

The false doctrine that teaches the Holy Spirit, His gifts and power are done away with causes great harm and suffering to the body of Christ. And that’s exactly what the enemy wants. He desires God’s people to walk in defeat and discouragement. He is so bent upon our destruction that he authored this slanderous lie against the Spirit of God.

Here is the evidence that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, His gifts and His power are for today.

  1. The Holy Bible says that the Scriptures are God-breathed, and they will endure forever. Do you believe the Holy Bible is God’s word? I do. And because I believe the Word of God I walk successfully in the baptism of the Holy Spirit, His gifts, and in His power. And you can too if you will believe His word.
  • “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Tim. 3:16-17.
  • “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” Isa. 40.8.
  • “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” Mt. 24:35.

  1. God is truthful. Do you believe God lies to you? Or do you believe He is truthful in every way? I believe God speaks only the truth, and because of this, His truth sets me free. I am not bound to religious lies conjured up by satan. I believe Him when He speaks of the benefits of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
  • All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal.” Ps. 130:5.
  • “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” 8:32.
  • “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.” Jn. 17:17.

  1. God tells us that He does not change, this includes the Holy Spirit, the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, and all of His gifts. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. Do you believe this? I do. And because I believe this I have the assurance that no matter what happens in today’s world, God is stationary and remains to be my foundation in this life.
  • “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Heb. 13:8.
  • “For I am the Lord, I change not.” Mal. 3:6a.
  • “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” Jas. 1:17.

  1. Concerning the Baptism of the Holy Spirit here are a few verses found in the Bible.
  • “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” Jn. 7:38-39.
  • Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” Rom. 8:26-27.
  • “Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” Acts 2:38-39.

  1. He said that when the Holy Spirit comes upon us that we would have His power. Is your life filled with the power of the Holy Spirit? Or is your walk with the Lord lame? If it’s the latter, what are you going to do about it?
  • “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Mein Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8.
  • “If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” 11:11-13.
  • “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:4.

Remember, Jesus is God’s gift to the sinner and the Holy Spirit and His baptism is for the believer only. If you have already received Jesus as your Savior and would now like to be baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of praying in tongues, then place your hand upon your heart and let’s pray this aloud together. Keeping in mind, this is not your earthly language, but a supernatural language given to you by the Spirit of God.

Dear Heavenly Father,

I am a believer in Jesus Christ, and I ask you in His name for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, with the evidence of speaking in tongues. I believe and receive from you.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

Now, it’s time to put your faith into action. Open up your mouth, move your tongue and give voice to what the Holy Spirit will pray through you. He will not force you, but as you activate faith He will flow through you with this utterance gift.

Both Jesus and His Salvation and the Holy Spirit and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit are great gifts to be received and opened and put to use in our daily lives, in Heaven and on Earth.

Scriptural Proof for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit

Baptism of the Holy Spirit

Do you know what the Bible has to say about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit? If not, you should understand. Praying in tongues, also known as praying in the Spirit, or praying or speaking in supernatural languages is a spiritual gift given to any believer in Jesus Christ. This gift is very powerful and will help you in many ways.

  1. You will receive power. “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8.
  2. We do not always know how to pray, the gift of tongues allows the Holy Spirit to pray through us the perfect will of the Father. Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26-27.
  3. When we pray in our supernatural language it edifies and builds us up.He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.” 1 Corinthians 14:4.
  4. When we pray in tongues we are promised that we will pray with supernatural power as a mighty rushing river. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” John 7:38-39.
  5. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is for anyone who has received Jesus as their Savior. Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38.
  6. Some believe that speaking in tongues is no longer for today, but according to Acts 2:39 it is for every believer starting back with Pentecost and even for us and our children today. “For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
  7. The evidence that someone has received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is that they will start to speak in tongues. And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.” Acts 19:6. And Acts 2:4, And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
  8. When we pray in tongues we are speaking mysteries to God, secret or hidden things. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.” 1 Corinthians 14:2.
  9. It is our heavenly Father who gives us this good gift of the Holy Spirit to those who ask of Him. If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?  If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” Luke 11: 11-13.

How to Remain Faithful

We live in an unfaithful world, even God’s people struggle to remain faithful nowadays. But that does not mean we need to join the ranks of the unfaithful. But how can we remain faithful when many around us are falling from the faith? How do we remain faithful in an unfaithful world?

Our ability to remain faithful in an unfaithful world was so important to Jesus that He prayed the following for His disciples, including you right before He was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane. I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.  I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.  Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.” (John 17:14-19.)

First of all, in this portion of Scripture He gives us the key, we are not of the world. We live on this earth, but we are not to be of its sinful ways. But we are to sanctify ourselves with the washing of His Word, see Eph. 5:26.

He continues on with His prayer to the Father, I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.So often, Christians pray to the Father, “Take me home.” But this is not how we are to pray to escape trials and tribulations. We are to pray as Jesus does, “Father, keep them (me) from the evil one.” As I meditate upon this portion of Scripture it reveals that there is a purpose for us to be on this earth. We are to be about our heavenly Father’s business and win the lost, but if we do not sanctify ourselves in the Word the world will win us over with their sinful ways.

Not only are we to pray, “Father, keep me from the evil one and his ways.” But we are to say no to temptations. How do we accomplish this, especially when the temptations are increasingly stronger in these last days? James teaches us the spiritual plan to victory in every situation in James 4:7, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

  1. We are to submit ourselves to God. Submit in Greek is “hypotássō”, G5293, and it means to obey:—be under obedience (obedient), put under, subdue unto, (be, make) subject (to, unto), be (put) in subjection (to, under), submit self unto. In other words, we are subdue our human will, our fleshly desires, and put ourselves under the authority of God. You may think this is not possible. It is. Why? Because when Jesus walked this earth, He left His God powers in Heaven, and walked this earth just as we do. And because He was tempted in every way that we are, but did not sin, we can now overcome temptations as well, see Heb. 4:15. But first, we have to give up our human will, and surrender to the Father’s will, just like Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane when He sweat great drops of blood for us, see Luke 22: 41-44.
  2. Then we are to resist the devil. This word “resist” in the Greek language is “anthístēmi“, G436, and it means to set one’s self against, to withstand, oppose. Remember, we have been given all authority over satan and all of his wicked works, see Luke 10:19. We’ve been given spiritual armor according to Ephesians 6:10-20, which includes a shield of faith to quench all of satan’s fiery darts, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. And just as Jesus overcame temptation that evening in the Garden of Gethsemane to run away from His destiny, which was to be slaughtered for our redemption by praying for Himself, we too are to do the same. Pray to the Father, thank Him for giving to us His Holy Spirit, and the supernatural gift of tongues to pray and edify, build ourselves up when we are weak in faith, see 1 Cor. 14:4.
  3. When we faithfully activate God’s spiritual plan of victory we turn the tables and the devil will flee from us. And this word flee in Greek is pheúgō, G5343, means to run away to escape us.

And this is how we remain faithful in an unfaithful world. And being faithful has an everlasting promise for us, the faithful Church in Revelation 3:8-10, “I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name. Indeed I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie—indeed I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you.  Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.

The Power of Unity Heals

There is spiritual power released when people join together in unison to accomplish a task. It does not matter whether the purpose is for good or for evil–supernatural power is released, and dreams and visions come to pass, and miracles happen.

Do you remember the historical event recorded in Genesis 11: 1-9 called the “Tower of Babel”? Why were these people able to accomplish the vision of the tower? Because they were in unity, the people were of the same mindset, and they spoke the same language, and they put their faith into action. Even though, the motives of their hearts were wrong, (they wanted to build a name for themselves), they were able to accomplish a great feat. This act was so great that it caught the attention of the Lord, and so the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit went down to see the great city and the great tower they had built.

Now, like I mentioned earlier, the power of unity works both ways. It can accomplish good or evil. Let us focus on the good that it can produce. It says in Matthew 18:18-20, “Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven. Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven. For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”

There is another historical, yet supernatural event recorded in Joshua 6, where God gives a seemingly ridiculous plan to overtake the City of Jericho. The plan involved the power of unity, faith in action and the spoken word. Joshua and the Israelites did as the Lord commanded them and they supernaturally overpowered Jericho.

I want us to take these historical events and learn from them and put the lessons that they teach us into practice today. More specifically, I desire that we learn how to operate in the power of unity and together fight off our enemy, satan, and build a strong tower of faith in the redemptive work of Christ around our family and friends who are battling against premature death, sickness and disease. This is possible.

In unison we can use the power of our spoken words and intercede on the behalf of our loved ones. We can take our authority over premature death and disease, speak life, healing and recreation into their mortal body. We can pray in the Spirit daily. We can personalize and speak healing Scriptures over them and call forth the healing by the power of the spoken Word of God.

Together, we can take turns and visit them everyday and read God’s Word concerning healing. The Book of Luke is a great place to start. It is filled with supernatural healing and miracles. We can also share exciting healing testimonies to stir their faith and to encourage them that all things are possible, even their healing.

When we band together, our faith will arise as our faith-filled prayers are lifted up to the throne of grace. And as we become unified in the faith for healing we will expect nothing less than a miraculous report of divine healing. Matthew 18:19 confirms this unified plan, “Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.”

Deliverance By the Blood

I recently ministered to a congregation about the redemptive blood of Jesus Christ. I used an interpreter to translate the message into the language of the local people. I was midway into the lesson when all of a sudden the interpreter started to shout.

“I can’t do this! This is too hard for me! Will someone please pray for me?”

I reached my hand out and touched him on the shoulder to pray for him, when all of a sudden the young man ran out of the sanctuary and into the hallway. It caused a great disruption in the meeting, and the people stood up to watch him. I was able to get the people to sit down and we continued on with the meeting. But what I was not able to see from the pulpit was the young man as he began to vomit and vomit, and vomit.

What happened during this healing service? Unbeknown to me, this nice young man was not born-again, and the demons within him could not handle the message of the redemptive blood of Jesus Christ. And this young man was delivered from demon spirits, and received Christ as his Savior.

I have seen time and time again, as I preach about the blood that Jesus shed for us that supernatural power is released and the demons residing within the unregenerated souls are literally tormented and they scream and act out in terror.

What is the message of the redemptive blood of Christ? “But [in fact] He has borne our griefs, and He has carried our sorrows and pains; yet we [ignorantly] assumed that He was stricken, struck down by God and degraded and humiliated [by Him]. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was crushed for our wickedness [our sin, our injustice, our wrongdoing]; the punishment [required] for our well-being fell on Him, and by His stripes (wounds) we are healed.” Isaiah 53:4-5. AMP.

If ever there was a time, it is now for us, the ambassadors of Christ, to follow His example and to be about our heavenly Father’s business and return to the true gospel message of the redemptive blood of Jesus Christ and preach and minister with His authority with signs and wonders following and set the captives free.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” Luke 4:18-19.

Our Identity and Authority in Christ

If God created the world to be so good and perfect, then why is it imperfect today? Let’s look to the Book of Genesis to find out just what went wrong. Most of us have heard about the fall of humanity, when Eve was tempted by the serpent (satan) to eat the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (see Gen. 3). She ate the fruit and gave it to Adam, and he ate of it too. Let’s look closer at what really happened here. This account in Scripture is more than just disobeying Daddy’s rules and stealing apples!

I find it interesting that the serpent of old cowardly avoided the governor, Adam, and went instead to the vise-governor, the helper, Eve, in order to set in motion his plan of deception. Let’s observe what the serpent (satan) said to Eve and find out why he tempted her.

Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:4-5).

Satan lied to Eve when he said that she would be like God. He was playing with her identity by twisting words. She was already like God. She was created in the mirror image of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, (see Gen. 1: 26-28). But satan was deceiving her into thinking that the knowledge of evil was something to be desired. However, he didn’t tell her the end result. I wonder why? She knew what good was, but she did not know evil. As she meditated on what he had said to her, she convinced herself that it would be satisfying to her body and that it would make her wise. She ate of the forbidden fruit and gave it to Adam. Adam could have refused to eat the forbidden fruit, but he didn’t. He was just as guilty as Eve (see Gen.2).

If we want to breakthrough in healing, we need to understand the answers to some important questions. Why did satan tempt Adam and Eve? Why does he bother tempting us today? Who exactly is satan? And what does all of this have to do with being redeemed from the curse of sickness and disease? We need to know more than just the fact that we are redeemed from the curse. We need a deeper understanding of where the curse originated. When we understand who is behind the curse and what the curse really is, it will be easier for us to receive divine healing into our physical bodies.

Who is satan?

Scripture talks about the fall of Lucifer. He was a beautiful angel that God created. Be he deceived himself and became full of pride because of his beauty, and he thought he was greater than God. He even deceived a third of the angels to believe his deceitful lie and convinced them to rebel against God with him. Scripture says that he fell from Heaven (see Isa. 14:12), but before he fell, it says that he was the anointed cherub who covered and that he was in Eden, the Garden of God, as well as on God’s holy mountain (see Ezek. 28: 13-15). But lucifer was evicted from these places and, more importantly, from God’s presence, and his name was changed to satan (the devil). The angels who fell with him are now called demonic spirits. And God has a place prepared for them called hell, the worst part of which is separation from God, Himself. His foolish pride cost him everything; he lost it all (see Isa. 14:12-21; Ezek. 28: 12-19; Rev. 12: 4, 9; 20:10).

Why Did Satan Go after Adam and Eve?

He was jealous over what he had lost, and he was even more envious of these beings who were created in the mirror image of God. Before lucifer fell, he was created as a beautiful angel (see Ezek. 28:12-19), but he had not been created in the mirror of God. The first man, Adam, was so special. He was so different from the rest of creation. Not only was he created in the mirror image of God, but he was created to have authority and dominion over all things on this Earth (see Ps. 8:6), and that included satan. Satan wanted Adam’s authority and dominion on this Earth, and that’s why he tempted Adam and Even in the Garden of Eden. And as soon as they ate of that forbidden fruit they handed over their authority and dominion on this Earth to satan. That’s what he coveted and pursued, and that’s how he got it (see Luke 4:6).

Why Does Satan Go After Us Today?

He is venomously envious of us because he knows that we are created in the mirror image of God. He knows that we, as believers in Jesus Christ, have been given back that authority and dominion on this Earth that he stole from Adam and Eve back in the Garden of Eden. When Jesus Christ took our place at Calvary, He restored humanity’s original authority on the Earth.

For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet (Psalm 8:5-6).

In Psalm 8:5, the Hebrew word translated in some versions as angels is Elohim. Elohim is a Hebrew name for God. There is a big difference between angels and God. Let’s read from another translations of Psalm 8:5-6.

Yet You have made him a little lower than God, and You crown him with glory and majesty!
You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet (NASB).

In Psalm 8, the angels are conversing with God concerning humanity and the position that people have been given by God in the realm of all of His creation. I believe Psalm 8:5-6 is a confirmation of Genesis 1:26-28—that God created people in His mirror image and gave them authority and dominion over all things on the Earth.

In searching the word Elohim, I have found several definitions. Elohim is plural and could be referring to God (God the Father; God the Son, Jesus Christ; and God the Holy Spirit), gods, angels, or heavenly beings. I believe, in this portion of Scripture, Elohim is referring to God the Father; God the Son, Jesus Christ; and God the Holy Spirit.

As Christians, we agree that we have not been made a little lower than false gods. But, what about the possibility that people were created a little lower than angels or heavenly beings? If we were created a little lower than angels or heavenly beings, then satan would have authority over us because satan (lucifer) is a fallen angel. And that would not line up with the Scripture in the New Testament that says we have been given authority over satan and all of his wicked works, including sickness and disease, (see Luke 10:19). I personally refuse to be beneath satan!

Our true identity is probably the most important truth that satan tries to conceal from us because he knows that once we start to unveil the truth about who we really are in Christ and who Christ is in us, we become lethal to satan and his kingdom of darkness. Once we start to recognize who we are in Christ, we start to seize our authority over satan, the temptation of sin, and the consequences of living in a fallen world, such as sickness, disease, and every other foul curse that comes our way. In other words we start to dominate satan and his evil works, instead of him dominating us. It is amazing that he can identify those who start to comprehend their identity and operate in their authority in Christ.

I remember traveling to the Maasailand in Northern Tanzania for the first time. Before an evening evangelistic campaign, a demon-possessed man that I had never seen before ran up to me and knelt before me. The demons within him started to cry out to me in English (for I did not understand the Maasai language), “Why have you come to torment us?” I was astounded. How can they perceive when we know who we are in Christ? I believe it is partly by watching how we start to speak and act. And there is also an actual unveiling of the glory of God that takes place in the spirit realm that they identify and that requires them to yield to and admit defeat.

It is of utmost importance during these last days, that we recognize who we are in Christ and activate the authority given to us over satan and all of his wicked works.

Praying Mysteries

Many years ago, while washing the breakfast dishes I was praying in tongues. I’m not sure how long I had been praying in the Spirit, I only know that I found myself leaning against the kitchen wall and I heard myself say aloud to the Lord, “An orphanage?”

Oftentimes, when we speak in tongues we pray into existence things that are hidden from our natural understanding.  As it says in 1 Corinthians 14:2, “For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.” This word mysteries (Strong’s G3466 – mystērion) means hidden thing, secret or mystery.

In regards to the opening testimony, the Spirit of God was revealing His plans for my husband and I that neither of us knew about.  He was about to send us to Guatemala as full-time missionaries, and one of His assignments for us was to start an orphanage.

I fully believe that the Lord desires us to know His plans and purposes for us, and speaking in tongues reveals His will to us and prays them into existence.

Also, as we surrender our human tongues to the Holy Spirit He discloses secrets that are necessary to know in order to minister to people effectively.

Case in point, I was ministering to a couple in another country. The woman was a follower of Jesus Christ and was believing for a miracle for her husband who had lost his mind. And no one could figure out why.

As I began to speak in my heavenly language, the Holy Spirit gave me the following vision and exposed the strong hold. I saw a row of empty clothes hangers hanging from a poll. I then saw a communist ring on his finger. I told them what I saw and asked if it witnessed with them. It did.

They were unequally yoked, she was a believer in Christ, and actively involved in the things of the Lord, and he was a communist. But when their situation was discovered they lost their dry cleaning business. And the financial pressure was more than he could bear and he lost his mind.

In the natural I had no way of knowing about this situation, but by this supernatural gift of communication (tongues) with the Holy Spirit the secret stronghold was exposed, and the steps to his healing were known; he was to renounce communism and give his life to Christ.

The gift of tongues is so powerful, and it’s an entrance that leads to the other gifts of the Holy Spirit. I pray you receive this gift today.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit, Tongues and Interpretation of Tongues

During a Holy Spirit conference, a pastor from a very conservative denomination sat in the front row. I could sense he felt out of place, but when he was presented with a clear Biblical presentation he was able to believe and receive that day. And his ministry was forever changed.

The baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of praying in tongues, and the interpretation of tongues continues to be a topic of contention within the body of Christ. I believe this is because satan is afraid of the supernatural power that is released when God’s people activate the power of the Holy Spirit and pray in their supernatural languages. So, he constantly stirs up confusion and strife via the lack of teaching and training concerning these very powerful weapons of spiritual warfare that God has given to us. Let’s clear up the confusion and see what the Bible has to say about them.

In the book of Acts before Jesus ascended into heaven He was teaching the apostles about things to come. He told them of another baptism, the baptism of the Holy Spirit that would soon come upon them, (see Acts 1:5). He told them they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them, (see Acts 1:8).

And in the second chapter of Acts we read of the Day of Pentecost when suddenly a noise came from heaven like a violent rushing wind and it filled the whole house, and tongues of fire rested upon them and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving the utterance. (See Acts 2: 1-4.)

Most Christians believe that this took place, but many believe that mighty move of the Holy Spirit was for the early Church and not for believers today. Let’s look to the Scriptures for clarity.

The Apostle Peter declared to the onlookers of this amazing event starting with verse 14 that what they witnessed is what the Prophet Joel prophesied about saying that in the Last Days a mighty outpouring of the Holy Spirit would come forth on all people. Did the world end with the early Church? No. This was referring to a new dispensation of the Holy Spirit, which did not end, but just began.

Peter continues to teach and tells the listeners what they need to do in verse 38. He tells them they need to repent, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and that they will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. And he goes on to tell them in the next verse who the promise of the Holy Spirit is for. He says to them, “For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” (See Acts 2:39.) Peter includes us when he says, “and to all who are afar off” in the promise to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Now, that we laid the foundation, let’s continue on and see what else the Word has to say about the baptism of the Holy Spirit, tongues and the interpretation of tongues.

The Holy Spirit:

  • The Holy Spirit is a good gift from the Father, and not an evil one. It says in Luke 11:11-14, “If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit:

  • The baptism of the Holy Spirit is powerful and reserved for the believer in Jesus Christ only. It would literally destroy an unregenerated spirit. It says in Luke 5:37-38, “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
  • This baptism is for any and all believers in Jesus Christ.  For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:39).
  • Through His baptism we receive His power, Acts 1:8 says, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
  • The initial evidence of being baptized in the Holy Spirit is that you will pray in tongues. As it happens in Acts 2:4, “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Tongues and the Interpretation of Tongues:

  •  Tongues and its co-partner, the Interpretation of Tongues are spiritual gifts given to us by the Holy Spirit, and not the devil. (See 1 Cor. 12:10.)

The Purpose of the Gift of Tongues:

  •  The Holy Spirit prays through us when we don’t know how. “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” (Rom. 8:26-27).
  • Our spirit prays for the unknown. “For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.” (1 Cor. 14:2).
  • To build ourselves up. “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.” (1 Cor. 14:4).
  • So supernatural power can flow through us. “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:38).

The Purpose for the Interpretation of Tongues:

  • When we are in a public setting we need the gift of Interpretation of Tongues to be in operation so that the supernatural message can be understood by all. 1 Corinthians 14:13 gives us instruction concerning this situation, “Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.”

I believe, just like the pastor from the conservative denomination believed and received after he heard a clear Biblical presentation concerning the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the gift of tongues and the interpretation of tongues that many others from mainline denominations will be open to receive when they hear the truth presented with clarity.
