We read in Matthew 2:1-2, “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” The wise men of old embarked on a spiritual journey that led them to the Savior, Jesus Christ. They followed a sign, the star, a bright shining light in the heavens. This supernatural sign guided them to the truth found only in Jesus.
Let’s study these 2 verses a bit more in depth to find an added dimension to our beloved Christmas story. First of all, the wise men according to the Blue Letter Bible are defined as the oriental wise men (astrologers) who, having discovered by the rising of a remarkable star that the Messiah had just been born, came to Jerusalem to worship him. I find it interesting that Holy Spirit would highlight a few astrologers in this supernatural event, but then again it’s very fitting. Think about what an astrologer is and what they are seeking. The definition of a wise man is a man versed in magic, witchcraft, or astrology, and as stated on www.dictionary.com the word astrology is the study that assumes and attempts to interpret the influence of the heavenly bodies on human affairs. These wise men may not have been in right standing with God in the beginning of this spiritual journey, but they were seeking truth through signs and wonders. And the Star of Bethlehem was an amazing wonder that caught the attention of their spirits. And when they found Jesus they bowed their knees before Him, knowing that they had encountered the real King of kings.
What does the Bible say about signs and wonders? … Signs and wonders point to something greater than the natural working of things on this earth, and true signs and wonders always point to Jesus.
I pray if you are searching for the truth in this life that you will discover the real Jesus. You will experience a divine encounter with Him and come to believe in your heart that He is who He says He is and you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. I pray in this spiritual journey that you will discover the true meaning of Christmas and receive His most precious gift–eternal life.
- God provided the way for us to have eternal life. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.“ John 3:16.
- There is only one way to salvation, eternal life with the Father, “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.“ John 14:6.
- It is by God’s grace, not our good works that we enter into Heaven. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.“ Ephesians 2:8-9.
- To enter into God’s kingdom you must do this, “Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3.
- This is how to have eternal life in Heaven with the Father, “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.“ Romans 10:9-10.
Perhaps, you have already found the truth in Jesus and you have humbled yourself before Him and received Him as your Savior, but you desire to know your Savior more. The Word promises us in James 4:8, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” Isaiah 55:1-3, “Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money come, buy and eat Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. “Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and delight yourself in abundance. “Incline your ear and come to Me Listen, that you may live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, according to the faithful mercies shown to David.”
Then there are people all around you that are lost and seeking truth. Many of them have found something that appears greater than they are in the occult and New Age practices. This is the reason they sought this way, they do not want dead religion, they desire something real. The challenge for us this Christmas is to be a light that leads them to the truth that is found only in Jesus Christ.
The beauty of this challenge is that God never expects us to win the Lost in our own strength, but in the strength of His Spirit–Holy Spirit. Zechariah 4:6 tells us how to do this, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.“ He tells us how He will empower us in Acts 1:8, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” And He commissions us in the Great Commission, ““Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well,” Mark 16:15-18.
Let’s make Matthew 5:16 our personal prayer for this Christmas season, “May my light so shine before men, that they may see my good works, and glorify my Father which is in heaven.” Lead them to Jesus–without knowing it, they are waiting for you to lead the way that they may too embark on their spiritual journey and find Jesus, their true Savior.
